Fenway was SMOKIN' !

As I watched yet another guy with a t-shirt declaring Phish's "Final" tour/concert passing by me; it occurred to me that seeing Phish play after properly mourning their death five years ago, is like attending the funeral of a good friend, and then hanging out with him a few years down the road like nothing happened.  The ghost of the band I used to love so much are surprisingly better versions of their previous selves, and they made 40 thousand + phans very happy last night, and we witnessed history in the making!

The drive down to Boston from NY/VT (getting honked at by others on their way to the show) was phine and were greeted warmly by our friends Nick and Katie and their new home (thanks yall). Nick then demonstrated how they drive down here in Mass. as he took us to Fenway. We squirreled up some over priced parking and started into the scene. Heads filled the streets and we took over the surrounding areas with Phishy culture, but we barely noticed barreling towards the venue past the throngs of fans.
The rain broke and the sun came out as Phish sang the national anthem on home plate in a brotherly embrace and Fenway went WILD! Sample in a Jar opened and never has a crowd been so amped that I have had trouble hearing the music due to sing-alongers all around. The changing weather from storm to sun seemed to pulse with the music, and as they played The Moma Dance, Fenway was Smoking in more ways than the music, see video below. Let's just say the combination of lax security and the new Massachusetts law regarding Marjiuana decriminalization had an impact on Fenway (and the surrounding neighborhood I'm sure).

A rainbow appeared over the crowd and we had an amazing musical journey and a full daytime set of music in historic Fenway park. It was a beautifully crafted set with a song focus that kept the crowd rocking in the sun. We heard the debut of 2 songs overall, and a rare Destiny Unbound that was for the peeps. They finished the first set on an amazing high-note with a building Character Zero.

They had a short set break and came out for a more jammy second set, and the night danced with the light show.  Highlights for me were David Bowie, Bathtub Gin, an AMAZING You Enjoy Myself (YEM), and perfect encore of Led Zeppelin's Good Times Bad Times>Tweezer Reprise.

On our way out we saw the bassist Mike Gordon  and as he scurried past me on the stairs I was able to blurt out "nice show guy"... I am a dork. Overall this show just whet my thirst for more. I am definitely looking forward to some smaller venues, but we just couldn't ask for a better way to start our journey. The music is already amazing and as Jay and I reminded eachother yesterday, that's what it's really all about here.
Thanks to Nick and Katie for putting us up! It was great to see Max Tracy last night as well, great to see you buddy! Jay and I are off to get some food and prep for our camp-out on Long Island where we will see Phish 3 more times!
